Welcome to the month of July
A game of two halves
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day— 1 Cor.4.7
As I write the planet is in the grip of FIFA World Cup fever. The four-yearly international event which is said to be the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world is delivering on its promise to be the most thrilling ever.
Sports, in general, serves a useful metaphor for how we live our lives as Christians. We can learn and apply the positive characteristics of teamwork, discipline, perseverance, goal setting and how to win. Football is often referred to as a game of two halves with each half sometimes completely contrasting in character. Those who follow the sport closely will recall with glee, the great comebacks or nail-biting last minute clinches. The beautiful game teaches us:
• Good beginnings are okay but good endings are crucial.
• The halftime score is not always a true indicator how the game will end.
• The game is not over until the last kick of the ball.
July marks the commencement of the second half of the year. For some of us, it’s been a great first half. For most of us, the past six months has been one challenge after another and we have conceded more goals than we have scored.
The good news is that its only half-time! I declare that your latter will be greater than your past and that every prophecy, prediction or promise that has been spoken over your life for 2018 will come to pass IJN.
