From the Pastors Desk
Welcome to the month of June
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1.17
Thank the Lord for the gift of fathers. The history of Father’s Day goes back to 1908 when a church in the US State of West Virginia held a sermon to honour 362 men who were killed in a coal mining explosion. Sitting in the congregation was a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who was raised by a single parent father along with six other siblings. She started her quest to establish Father’s Day as a national holiday. In June of 1910 Father’s Day was officially celebrated for the first time. Today, although not with the same level of enthusiasm, Father’s Day is observed across the world. One little boy, when asked to explain Father’s Day, said, “It’s just like Mother’s day, only you don’t spend as much on presents”.
We salute everyman who God has entrusted with his sacred title of “father”, as you seek to live out this good and perfect gift. In so doing we include all men. Whether or not you have biologically fathered a child, you possess the inherent paternal nature of your Creator and therefore must play your part in affirming, protecting and guiding the young of our community. We also honour the memories of our fathers who are no longer with us by giving God thanks for their life and sacrifice. Happy Father’s Day!
